Streaming Video
Adding video to your site via services like Youtube or uploading flash video adds media to your site that could have happened moments ago or far into the past. Now lets say you want to add live content. This poses a number of technical problems and cost. Services like Ustream or LiveStream make this process somewhat easier. With Ustream you will need some sort of internet connection to transmit your data. This is great if you have an internet connection and its free. Otherwise you could use Live stream which is 2,500/mnth and stream any where in HD as long as you have cell service. It might sound like a lot of money, but compared to bringing a television truck it is actually very cheap.
Ebooks Future or Failure
The Ebook or digital book comes in many formats and uses an array of technology to deliver content to your computer or e reading device. Amazon has the kindle and software to run on the iphone. While Barns and Noble has thier new software that runs on your pc, mac, iphone or smartphone. Then there are the flash based ebooks. These run on any device that will display flash websites. There is also the epub format that will run on a number of devices.
In the updated content we'll be trying out some of these techologies and seeing which ones work for individuals or small companies trying to publish information on thier websites in place of thier printed cataloges and content and the self publisher trying to get thier book online.
Portable Apps : Bring your data with you.
One thing I know about is being on the move. I work full time as an IT person . I need my data every where I go. The problem is I don't always have internet. That rules out webbased apps. for stuff I need all the time. So, I turned to designing software that would run on any computer (PC) and not cost any more to run and be accessible on a thumb drive.
Both Filemaker developer and Access 2007 have run time engines that are free (The software to actually make this isn't free but at around 250.00 Access is the cheaper of the two). If I develop anything on either of these platforms I can stick it on a flash driver and bring my data with me and run them on any computer. With Access I just have to install the free run time application that keep on the flash driver. Add a copy of Portables Apps ( A collection of programs that run off your flash drive. If you haven't used it you should !!) and my office resides on a small portable drive.
Now for looking up email info (when internet is available)on outlook I find IMAP works best. I can keep a copy at home and work and not loose a single email. Add it to a laptop and I have it on the go. It does mean I have to keep the amount of email down below 2gb. I have managed this by saving any key information to an access database (on the thumb drive) and down loading and filing any attachments.
